The SUNY College at Brockport Summer Session Program at the University of Puerto Rico is a unique program for those interested in Puerto Rico's culture and the Spanish language. This 4 week program is designed to increase participants' ability to communicate in all aspects of the Spanish language as well as to provide them with an understanding of Puerto Rican history and cultural patterns. The program is designed to provide students with hands-on experience of the Spanish Language and Puerto Rican culture, past and present. In addition to traditional classroom instruction the program includes weekly field trips, workshops and cultural activities to enhance learning while allowing students to become knowledgable with some of the most important features of Puerto Rican society and landscape. The program also includes the opportunity to participate in additional, optional field trips and social and cultural activities. Courses are taught by highly qualified professors from the University of Puerto Rico.

The University of Puerto Rico was founded in 1903 as a public institution of higher education. Since its foundation, the university has responded to the social, cultural, and professional needs of Puerto Ricans. The Rio Piedras campus is a place of intense cultural activity. The University system is composed of eleven campuses and other institutional units administered by a president and a board of trustees. The University of Puerto Rico is also an institution accredited by the Middle States Association.

The Rio Piedras campus is located on a 289-acre area north of San Juan, the capital of the island. The campus is the largest in the university system, not only by population but also by its academic offerings. Courses

Spanish (ESPA 312X, 3 crs)

This course is available in three levels: basic, intermediate, and advanced. Placement in these courses is strictly subject to the university faculty's placement test. The language courses are designed to integrate the students' cultural experiences, and develop all aspects of the Spanish language: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Puerto Rican Linguistics and Literature (ESGE 4995, 3 crs)

For advanced undergraduate and graduate students of Spanish only. This course presents an overview of the Spanish language in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, as well as an introduction to the island's literature.

Society and Culture in Puerto Rico (ESGE 4995, 3 crs)

Puerto Rican band.This course is an overview of Puerto Rico's culture that explores history, arts, folklore, ecology, economics, geography, and politics. Depending upon enrollment there will be one session taught in Spanish and one session taught in English. The course is designed as a series of topical lectures and workshops given by experts in each field and integrated with the field trips and cultural activities to provide greater hands-on experience.

Cultural Activities of the Program

Backpackers around a waterfall.Previous course sessions have included trips to the Puerto Rican Art Museum, the Camuy Caverns, El Yunque rainforest, Ponce, Old San Juan, Luquillo beach and the Arecibo Observatory, meetings with local authors, Bomba and Plena music workshops.

Housing

Participants will be housed in the Torre Norte residence at the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras in double rooms (single accommodation will also be available). The residence provides common bathrooms and a common kitchen with a sink, microwave oven and stovetop. The residence also has a computer lab, TV and game room as well as drink and snack vending machines. Food vouchers are redeemable at many on-campus food concessions. Eligibility

  • Two years of college Spanish or the equivalent
  • GPA of 2.5
  • Must be able to demonstrate interest and maturity via a study statement and references.

Application Deadline

Applications are due by April 28, 2006. Applications submitted after May 1st will have a late fee of $75.Upon availability of spaces we will accept applications until  May 19.

Cost - $3,500Garita San Juan

The cost of the program includes registration to courses, college credits, housing on campus residence, health insurance, breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday except holidays, transportation from and to the airport in San Juan, six field trips (to be determined at a later date), admissions, class materials and books, use of all campus facilities, orientation and farewell activities in Puerto Rico.
