Brockport Receives Grant From Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation
College will use funds to purchase sport wheelchairs
BROCKPORT, NY—The College at Brockport, State University of New York, has received an $11,000 grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation’s Quality of Life program that will make participation in sporting events and activities more accessible for people with disabilities.
The funds were awarded to Brockport’s Committee on Disability and Access and will be used to purchase sport wheelchairs. These wheelchairs are lightweight and feature increased maneuverability, which makes them ideal for sporting events/activities. Access to sport wheelchairs will serve the Brockport community in at least three significant ways: providing inclusive opportunities for students with and without disabilities to play together, an enhanced academic experience for students in the College’s adapted physical education and recreation and leisure studies programs, and generating opportunities for the College to serve the community of people with disabilities throughout the region.
The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving quality of life for individuals living with paralysis, has awarded $809,291 to 90 nonprofits across the country during the first grant cycle of 2017. The Quality of Life program conceived by the late Dana Reeve has awarded more than $22 million in grants since its inception in 1999.
The Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy.
